Cellist Dominique Beauséjour-Ostiguy and violinist Marie Bégin present a carefully curated programme that traces the arc from Baroque counterpoint to early twentieth-century modernism, centred on the expressive possibilities of a two-voice dialogue.
The concert opens with Bach's Inventions, works that distil the essence of Baroque counterpoint and serve as the philosophical and stylistic backbone of the evening. Ravel's Sonata for Violin and Cello then places that Baroque rigour in conversation with a distinctly modern harmonic language, making the historical dialogue between the two styles explicit.
The programme closes with the Passacaglia by Handel, as arranged by Halvorsen — a direct descendant of the Baroque variation tradition that transforms the interplay between cello and violin into a tour de force of virtuosity.
