Rising Suns: Art from the Confederacies of the Great Lakes and Rivers

Rising Suns: Art from the Confederacies of the Great Lakes and Rivers is the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' first collection presentation dedicated exclusively to Indigenous artists from the Rotinonhsion:ni, Wendat, W8banakiak confederacies and the Anishinaabeg alliances of the Great Lakes and Rivers region.

The exhibition brings together approximately twenty works created from the 1970s to the present day, encompassing a wide range of media: wampum beadwork, painting, photography, sculpture, video and installation. Together, these works explore nation-to-nation exchanges and Indigenous perspectives on the territory now known as Montreal.

Featured artists include Hannah Claus (Kanien'keha:ka), Nicolas Renaud (Wendat) and Christine Sioui Wawanoloath (W8banaki and Wendat), among other practitioners working across contemporary Indigenous media.

The exhibition is curated by Leuli Eshraghi, Curator of Indigenous Practices at the MMFA, and is presented in the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion. It runs until October 11, 2026.
