Oienkonton – Hanging Tobacco

Directed by Ellen Gabriel, this 2026 Canadian documentary (1h15) is presented in original versions with French subtitles, featuring Spanish and Kanien'kéha languages.

The film revisits the 1990 Kanien'kehá barricade at Kanehsatàke, where community members stood against a golf course expansion onto ancestral land. After a violent police intervention, a 78-day siege ensued, with solidarity from Kahnawà:ke playing a central role.

The documentary honours the Warriors' tradition of carrying tobacco as a symbol of protection and spiritual grounding while defending their people and territory.

This screening is part of the International First Peoples Festival (IFPF) 2026 at Cinéma du Musée.
