Adrien's Violin

Adrien has one dream: to become a violinist. In 1970s Port-au-Prince, getting hold of a violin is close to a miracle, especially for a young boy. Full of hope, he sets off on a quest filled with unexpected encounters in a strange world ruled by adversity.

This coming-of-age story gradually exposes the complexities and horrors beneath the Duvalier dictatorship. Adrien must face a loss of innocence through betrayal, manipulation and cruelty in a country where even the humblest dreams are crushed.

The play adapts a novel by Gary Victor, a major figure in Haitian literature. It draws on magical realism and celebrates resilience through the voice of a boy who refuses to give up dreaming.

The text was written by Gary Victor. Sofia Blondin directed and adapted it. The cast is Lyndz Dantiste, Tracy Marcelin, Papy Maurice Mbwiti, Mireille Métellus and Widemir Normil. It is a creation of Théâtre de 4'SOUS and Théâtre de La Sentinelle. The novel is published by Mémoire d'Encrier, and the project had an early development stage at the Festival international de la littérature (FIL).
