Les Îles Soeurs : La Réunion et Maurice

Filmmaker and journalist Charles Domingue brings the Indian Ocean's twin islands — Réunion and Mauritius — to life in this immersive travel presentation. Though separated by just 180 km, the two islands each chart a different political course: Réunion is a French overseas department, while Mauritius is an independent nation. Yet both share a rich, layered heritage shaped by African, European, and Indian populations whose customs, cuisines, and musical traditions intertwine.

Réunion dazzles with its dramatic terrain: roads that twist through jungle to reveal Chinese pagodas, Hindu temples, and timeless Creole houses, all in the shadow of the still-active Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Some peaks on the island reach 3,000 metres, sculpted over millennia by successive volcanic episodes.

Mauritius, dubbed 'paradise', enchants with postcard-perfect tropical scenery and lagoons sheltered by a coral reef that harbours exceptional marine life. Domingue's lens captures the authenticity beneath the island's iconic beauty.

Charles Domingue is a Québec-based documentary director and journalist who has filmed in more than 65 countries over 25 years. His work focuses on true stories and extraordinary encounters that reveal the richness of cultures around the world.
