Green Day is an American punk rock band from Berkeley, California, formed in 1987 under the name Sweet Children before adopting their final name in 1989. Their first two albums helped establish a strong fan base, but it was their 1994 release Dookie that propelled them to worldwide success, selling 20 million copies in the U.S. and 25 million globally. Alongside other Californian bands, Green Day is credited with bringing punk rock back into the mainstream in the U.S. To date, they have sold over 85 million albums worldwide, including more than 33 million in the U.S., and have won numerous awards, including four Grammy Awards.
